I have long marvelled at what Admiral Spruance and Nimitz accomplished on June 4 and 5, 1942. After months of setbacks (and a very limited but important psychological "win" by the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo) what was achieved at Midway was very much the miracle described by Gordon Prange. The American fleet launched from "Point Luck" toward a vastly superior foe who by all measures should have carried the day. The sacrifice of VT-6, the torpedo squadron from USS Hornet that lost every plane with only one survivor highlights the kind of war we were in and the kind of sacrifice needed to win it. I honor them and will never forget them. May we always have such to defend us.
Today we fight another enemy every bit as tenacious and fanatic. Our sacrifice has only just begun. Through this blog I hope to honor those who are fighting, those who sacrifice and those who have yet to join the battle but will. For those of us who have not thought about what this is about or how serious the threat, Google "Milestones." You will find a tract written by Sayyid Qutb and it will reveal all.
